Timeline

How Betti has grown.

Betti's first release came on 6 October 2026, after groundwork going back to 2017, including a PhD from 2019 to 2026. Into it went Vijai Kumar S's own code and ideas, built up over those years, together with the state of the art from academic research in geometry processing and meshing. Every release since has built on that. The milestones are below, newest first. The download page has the current release.

  1. v0.27

    Pictures and drawings

    Betti draws pictures of meshes, volume meshes and CAD models as PNG, PDF, EPS or SVG, coloured by part, region, quality or a file's values. In vector formats the edges stay sharp at any zoom. It also makes engineering drawing sheets with front, top and side views, hidden lines, overall dimensions and a title block.

    Conversion between formats is lossless by default. Each written file is read back and compared, and anything that would be lost is reported first.

  2. v0.26

    Scripts and coding agents

    Betti's commands can now be written into scripts, so one script can loop over parts, try sizes until a result is close enough, and keep meshes in memory between steps. Coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex and Copilot can call every command as a tool.

    Repair and booleans keep touching solids apart in the written file, on every model of the test sets. Remeshing no longer turns faces over on parts placed far from the origin.

  3. v0.25

    Healing real-world CAD

    CAD healing repairs far more real-world STEP models. It sews across the parts of assemblies and rebuilds edges that have drifted off their surfaces. On a large automotive model it leaves about a fifth as many gaps as before.

  4. v0.24

    All-hexahedral meshes Preview

    Closed surfaces and CAD parts can be filled with hexahedra only, keeping their sharp edges and corners. On a public benchmark of 202 models, 158 meshed with every cell valid. Large linear systems also solve several times faster.

  5. v0.23

    Volume meshes Preview

    The volume module arrived, for simulation:

    • tetrahedra for finite elements, linear or curved, with layers of prisms on walls;
    • polyhedra for finite volumes;
    • output as Gmsh, VTK, Abaqus, Nastran and OpenFOAM.

    Design for manufacture moved into a module of its own, with an estimate of how a part fills as it is injection moulded.

  6. v0.22

    More formats and more processes

    Betti now reads and writes JT and Nastran files, and reads Parasolid files. New checks on CAD parts cover:

    • wall thickness;
    • draft and undercuts;
    • where a cutter can reach.

    Design for manufacture extended to sheet metal, moulding, casting and four kinds of 3D printing.

  7. v0.21

    Features and design for manufacture

    IGES files are now read. Betti recognises the holes, bosses, fillets and chamfers of a part, each with its sizes. It also gained the first design for manufacture checks, for machining.

  8. v0.19, v0.20

    Offsets, healing and quads on CAD

    Closed solids can be offset by an exact distance. STEP models can be healed CAD to CAD; on the test corpus, free edges fell by 95%. CAD faces can now be meshed in quads.

  9. v0.18

    CAD models

    STEP models are now:

    • checked for defects;
    • meshed watertight on their exact surfaces;
    • remeshed for simulation, with every face and border kept.

    This is the first release under the name Betti.

  10. v0.16

    Leaner booleans

    Booleans and plane cuts became more robust and use much less memory.

  11. v0.14

    Shells, beams and shapes

    Thin-walled solids can be reduced to mid-surfaces with their thickness, for shell elements. Slender ones can be reduced to centrelines with their section properties, for beams. This release also added:

    • convex hulls and convex decomposition;
    • minimum bounding boxes;
    • fitting of planes, spheres, cylinders, cones and tori;
    • slicing into layers for printing.
  12. v0.13

    Remeshing that never crosses itself

    Every change made while remeshing is now checked, so the surface never crosses itself. This release also added:

    • consistent outward orientation;
    • extraction of the outer shell;
    • element quality reports;
    • build direction analysis for printing;
    • particles for SPH and DEM.
  13. v0.12

    Quads and denoising

    Surfaces can be remeshed into quads, or into quads with a few triangles. Noisy scans can be smoothed while their sharp edges are kept.

  14. v0.7 to v0.11

    Reconstruction and wrapping

    Surfaces can be rebuilt from scans and point clouds. Any input, however broken, can be wrapped in a clean, closed surface that keeps its sharp edges. Two surfaces can be compared by the distance between them.

  15. v0.3 to v0.6

    Repair, booleans and the command line

    These releases added:

    • exact booleans and plane cuts;
    • wall thickness;
    • assemblies meshed with shared interfaces;
    • hollowing with drain holes;
    • removal of small features.

    Repair closed every model of the repair test set with no crossings. The command-line tool shipped, with ready-built downloads for Linux, macOS and Windows.

  16. v0.1

    The first release

    The groundwork came together as a library that builds clean surfaces from loose triangles and remeshes them into well-shaped triangles. From the next release on, it was tested on real CAD parts.

  17. PhD

    A PhD

    From April 2019 to 1 July 2026, Vijai Kumar S did a PhD. Its research, and the academic work studied along the way, are part of the foundations Betti stands on.

  18. groundwork

    Years of groundwork

    From 2017 until the first release, years of work laid its foundations. Personal code and ideas on geometry, built up over that time, were gathered and rewritten as one. Alongside them came the best of academic research in meshing, repair and geometry processing, studied and brought in so that each tool starts from the state of the art.
